Bloggers Talk – Behind The Scenes Of Travel Bloggers – Part I

May 23, 2020

Nowadays as the Internet is overflowing and full of content creators, one of the most important and complicated things to do is to touch, impact and inspire people.
That’s why I approached some of my favorite travel bloggers and we sat down for a (virtual) conversation about their path, the successes & disappointments along the way, and how they were affected by the Corona times.
It was super interesting!

In this section I will share 3 of them,
And they have some great tips to share with you as well!
have a fun read (:

Age: 27 & 30

City of residence: We don’t have a house/residence anymore, but we are from Ghent, Belgiuml

How and why did you start your blog? Tell me how it all started…

It all started with our Instagram, our blog came a bit later and is still not our main channel.
We decided to start travelling because it’s something we wanted to do for years already.
So it definitely had nothing to do with social media. When we decided to start our first 5 months trip to Asia, we really wanted beautiful photos, so we decided to invest in a camera and a tripod. We started posting our adventures on Instagram to keep our family and friends up to date. But it evolved into what it is today! My (Laura) previous job was in social media, so I knew it was possible to make a living from it. So after a few months of growing our following, we decided to go for it.

What is your definition of a perfect trip? And what is the one thing you always pack and take with you?

A perfect trip is where we can combine adventures/new cultural experiences, with beautiful beaches to relax. Our favorite kind of trips are definitely road-trips/vanlife. We love the freedom!!!
We always pack our camera of course 😉 But also lots of medicines because I, Laura, always gets sick on almost every trip 😉 not so fun…

What was the milestone that made you feel that your blog/Instagram is on the right way?

To be honest, you never feel that way haha 😉 We always said: when we hit 50k, we will feel like we made it. At 100k we did not feel like it and at 200k we still don’t feel like it 😉 It’s a process… and we definitely learned that it’s not about the number of followers. I think you keep evolving and you keep finding new aesthetics etc. I don’t think there will ever be a moment when we think ‘Ok this is it’. Because you always keep comparing yourself to people who do better. But I guess we could say, we decided to go all in when we hit about 50k!

What was your biggest failure / disappointment regarding work?

I can’t really think of a major disappointment in terms of work… But what I can say is that there are definitely hard times and struggles. Like being ‘on’ the whole time, sharing your life every second of every day, constantly replying to dm’s from the moment you wake up until you go to sleep, it really never stops 😉 we LOVE what we do and we LOVE connecting with every single one. We know not all bloggers connect with their followers, but we do because we want to. But the pressure to constantly create new content (for your followers, but also for brands/hotels) and be online can’t be underestimated.

How did you pass Corona time? Did you manage to generate any value from it?

We spend our time at home at my parents place in Belgium. We definitely lost some of our income, but luckily, we also don’t have a lot of costs here. We actually decided instead of taking time off to relax and watch Netflix, to really use the time at home wisely. We worked on so many new projects that we probably wouldn’t have started while travelling! So that’s exciting!

What will be your first destination when you’ll be able travel again?

That all depends on when we will be able to travel again. Our whole year was planned. Once the borders open, we will probably only be allowed in a few countries in Europe, so I think we will travel around with a campervan in Europe.

Which massage would you like to share with new bloggers? Do you have any tips?

one tip: WORK HARD! It sounds very cliché but it’s the truth. Nicolas and I never chill on a beach with cocktails, only for photos 😉 most of the time we are creating or sitting behind our laptops. We would not change it for anything in the world. But be prepared to work 7 days a week from early morning to late evening! If it’s really your passion and something you want to do, you have to go all in, and you will make it!!!

How and why did you start your blog? Tell me how it all started…

Since we’ve met we like to travel together. Even before we turned the hobby into a profession, we used to fly several times a year. Almost two years ago, we decided to start posting pictures from our trips with some recommendations and see where it goes. We began to receive lots of comments, questions and kind words. Slowly we gained amazing people that started following our journey and accompanied us to this day on all our trips.

What is your definition of a perfect trip? And what is the one thing you always pack and take with you?

The perfect trip for us is, was and will always be – a hot and tropical destination. We are addicted to the sun, sea, pool and the feeling of freedom when exploring a small island in flip flops on motorcycle. And if we can walk around barefoot, it’s even better. We’ll always have a swimsuit in our suitcase. In my case [Sapir] I pack at least 20 different swimsuits for each vacation.

What was the milestone that made you feel that your blog/Instagram is on the right way?

The truth is that everything happened pretty quickly. When we started, we couldn’t believe that we’d touch so many people and that we’d meet so many people that are inspired by our journey and are looking consult with us about their trips. It’s an amazing feeling to add value to others, and we still take inspiration from other bloggers ourselves.

What was your biggest failure / disappointment regarding work?

We try to take things positively no matter what, and not allow ourselves sink. We had some disappointments, which we learned to accept with love and understanding and try to grow from. For example, there were times when we felt that our growth was stuck, and our content couldn’t reach new people. Instagram is a tough platform that goes through changes regularly, sometimes it’s hard to keep up and learn all the new methods. But we didn’t give up, and we fought to continue developing our account. Sometimes we got into situations we almost wanted to give up, but no matter what, we always supported each other and got out of it together.

How did you pass Corona time? Did you manage to generate any value from it?

The Corona time was a bit strange for us. We ended up flying to India and coming back to Israel two days before the isolation rule for returning travelers started, so we managed to enjoy one last trip before this situation started. To be honest, this period has a combination of many positive and negative things together. On one hand can’t fly, but on the other hand, it helped us discovering stunning trips and places here in the Israel. All in all, we believe that we have to find the positive sides in every situation and get the best out of it.

What will be your first destination when you’ll be able travel again?

Ugh, that’s the hardest question! Every day we feel like flying to a new destination and every day we talk about different destinations. But surely, it’ll be a location that has stunning beaches and white sands. That’s what we always want. For us, this is true freedom, and after all this time, it’s what we want to feel most. True freedom.

Which massage would you like to share with new bloggers? Do you have any tips?

First of all, good luck! You’ve made an amazing choice, getting on this adventure with yourself is the best thing you can do for yourself. Be honest with yourself, don’t choose a blog topic just because it’s cool, choose a topic that really suits you, your lifestyle and the person you are. Be prepared, it’s not easy, you’ll have lots of struggles and you’ll hear “No” many times, but if you are motivated, passionate, and true to yourself & who you are, you’ll fight through it and succeed. In the end, you can do it!
Practical tip: Work on your connections. Communicate with your followers. don’t ignore messages or comments, whether you have 100 followers or 10,000 – build your relationship with your followers and invest your attention in them as they invest in you.

Age: 25

City of residence: Tel Aviv, Israel

How and why did you start your blog? Tell me how it all started…

My mom would take me traveling with her since I was born. With time, I started developing huge love for photography and editing, and I kept uploading photos from different destinations I visited to social media. Slowly my Instagram started gaining followers and I started getting questions from people asking for recommendations and guidance. I spotted the potential, started specializing in photography, opened my blog and the rest is history (:

What is your definition of a perfect trip? And what is the one thing you always pack and take with you?

A trip that has a combination of everything, that combines relaxing time on beautiful beaches, nature and a big city. I will always have my laptop, camera and drone in my carry-on.

What was the milestone that made you feel that your blog/Instagram is on the right way?

It was a long process that took a few years, but the turnaround was about 3-4 years ago, when many people I didn’t know personally started following me on Instagram, got interested in my life and started asking me different questions.

What was your biggest failure / disappointment regarding work?

Unsuccessful collaborations. That’s also happens behind the scenes – it’s unpleasant but it reinforces and teaches you a lot.

How did you pass Corona time? Did you manage to generate any value from it?

I have tried to create original content related to topics I don’t normally address, such as photo editing etc. The Corona is still not behind us and I have a lot of other good ideas that I am putting into work right now.

What will be your first destination when you’ll be able travel again?

It will probably be a relatively close destination in Europe – with the least cases and most precautions. I don’t believe it will be possible before July-August, so we’ll have to wait and see which destination it will end up being.

Which massage would you like to share with new bloggers? Do you have any tips?

Create quality content – edit carefully, but don’t go crazy with filters that change the natural colors. Our world is so beautiful, and it bothers me when editing is suppressing the colors of the picture. There are no shortcuts for growth – buying followers etc. will only hurt you in the future and eventually damage your exposure, so it’s best to grow slowly and carefully.
And last – try to get something authentic out of yourself and don’t try to imitate other bloggers. Eventually, people will click the Follow button if they recognize something special and unique about you.
Hope it helps (-:

That’s it for now,
Hope you liked it!!
Tell me in the comments what destination would you visit first after the Corona time will pass us (:
And if you’re not following these AMAZING bloggers yet, now is the perfect time to start!
