10 Best Shows On Netflix – 2020

December 24, 2020

What is more right than ending 2020, the year when we were all locked at home looking for ways to pass the time, than a the list of 10 most “MUST-WACH” series on Netflix
(The answer is “there is no such thing”, for those who were wondering. There is nothing righter than that
!)

So, that is exactly why we are gathered here today, so I can pass on my top 10 to you!

I have collected for you a variety of genres (comedy, drama, crime, science fiction) so that you can surely find yourself on this list! (The order of the series’ appearance doesn’t matter)

Ready? Here we go!

1. Stranger things

Is a science fiction horror series (Just like I love it…) that takes place in the 1980s in Indiana, USA and tells the story of a group of teenage geeks who like to play dungeons and dragons after school (a fiction board game that combines a lot of imagination and associated with such nurds), only to their dismay, the scary characters in the game begin to appear in reality and a whole supernatural and dark world gets discovered.

In each of the seasons, different layers of the story get revealed and the plot continues to get even more complicated. Currently there are 3 seasons available on Netflix and the fourth season is on its way! (It will take time..). The original and fascinating plot, the unbelievable editing work, and the amazing actors are just some of the reasons this is a series you just cannot stop watching! P.S, you might not want to watch it in night time. If you’re a dreamer like me

2. Elite

Is a Spanish thriller that tells the story of a group of rich teens from one of the best high schools in the country.
When their school gets destroyed, 3 teens of low socioeconomic status are transferred to the high-class high school.

From the very first moment the class differences create intrigues between some of the kids and slowly starts a chain of events leading to the death of one of the class members. The chain of events does not end in this death and the plot continues to get even more complicated and messy by the hour.

The series, of course, deals with the “usual” issues of adolescents, but places a lot of emphasis on deeper and more difficult topics than homework and exams, such as; Sexual preferences, money, drugs and violence.

The way the plot evolves, the actors, the directing & editing (and of course this amazing language & accent I love so much) create a winning combination that makes the viewer want to finish the entire show in one day! You just can’t stop watching!

Each season has 8 episodes and right now there are 3 seasons available.
Season 4 is supposed to air early 2021 but due to the Corona situation, Netflix delayed filming and so the season’s release will likely be postponed respectively
.
Also, unfortunately, some of our beloved characters will not take part in the upcoming season.

3. I am not OKAY with this

Is a dramatic comedy. The plot centers on Sid, a weird and cynical teenage girl who is dealing with her father’s loss and being a teenager, which is very confusing and frustrating for her. And if all of this is not enough, she also discovers that she has superpowers!

It is a Stranger Things producers’ series which guarantees its’ greatness!
80th atmosphere and science fiction are always a winning combination for me!
So far only one season was released and it has 7 episodes of 20-30 minutes each, Which means that in a light binge of less than 4 hours, you’re all done, and believe me, it’s gonna be worth it!!

4.  Vis A Vis

Is a Spanish series taking place in Madrid women prison. The series begins when the main character – Macarena, enters the prison after being charged with crime she was framed for and the bail amount set for her was higher than she could afford. From that moment, she starts dealing with the new situation, the women in the prison and how to raise the million euros that can set her free.

That is a tough show that manages to surprise over and over again, make the viewer fall in love with some of the characters and truly hate others. I very much connect to series that makes you love who seems like the “bad guy” in the story and shows that there is no such thing as black and white, but life is somewhere on the gray scales.

The series has 4 seasons, when in the last episode of second season the series was supposed to be over and it felt that there was closure. After the series was taken down, another production company bought the rights and filmed another two seasons. The difference is very noticeable, if it is in the form of photography, the way the plot unfolds and some of the characters get switched with another, but the show continues to be excellent for my taste. The third season is not really clear but the fourth season is great!

A few months ago, they released a fifth season that was not really good for my taste.

It happens a few years after their release from prison and the plot is completely different from the series itself. I think their definitions were wrong and should have called the fifth season a “spin-off series”. It was totally not wirth watching this season.

Come on, you have a long binge in front of you, don’t be lazy (;

5. Dead To Me

Is a drama series with a comic twist.

A “Feel Good” series that helps you break away from the everyday and “escape” for a few minutes from routine. Just the way I like it.

The series focuses on two women in their 40s who experience a very big loss (each in her own lives) and meet in a support group for mourners.

The plot opens with the death of Jen’s husband, one of the women, played by the amazing Christina Applegate, by a hit-and-run accident.

Judy, played by Linda Cardinal (both also took part in the production), is a little harder to crack. She is a complicated character and pieces of information about her personality and past are revealed as the plot evolves. No spoilers.

The two connect and a real and brave friendship is formed between them along with all the lies and secrets that are slowly revealing.

The series sounds very heavy and that is exactly why I was so pleasantly surprised. With some very difficult issues like death and loss it, at the same time, manages to be light, witty and humorous and shows that no matter what happens, it is not the end of the world, even if it sometimes seems that way.

There are currently 2 seasons of 10 episodes each and there are rumors that a new season is coming up in 2021.

6.The Good Place

Is a fantasy comedy that deals with the biggest question in the world – what happens to us after we die?

The series focuses on Eleanor, a woman in her 30s who is killed in a horrific accident and arrives in the “after life”.

There she meets 3 more humans – Chidi, Tahani and Jason. together they begin to explore the “good place” they arrived to.

According to the plot, during a person’s life, points are scored. Every good deed a person does earns him points and every bad deed he does reduces his points.
When he dies all the points are calculated together and if he has passed a certain number of points, he is allowed to enter the “good place”. If he does not, then he gets send to the “bad place” (aka: hell).

As the plot evolves, we begin to realize that something strange is happening in the good place and the characters begin to discover, one by one, all the “failures” made in the creation of the good place.

An amusing, cynical and witty series that causes the whole essence of our actions on earth to be under a magnifying glass of “Is it good or bad”, and mostly just laughs at the system and all of humanity.

No spoilers – really worth watching, the plot unfolds very surprisingly!

7. Sex Education

Is a teen dramatic comedy.

The plot takes place in a British town and focuses on Otis Milburn, a 16-year-old boy, who lacks confidence and sexual experience. His mom is a psychological who specializes in sexual counseling.

During the first few chapters and because he learns from his mother Otis gives sexual advice to one of his high-school bullies.

The rumor spreads and slowly the teenagers start asking him for advice and guidance on sexual issues.

When She recognizes the economic potential, one of his school mates, Maeve, approaches him – and together they start charging money for the advice Otis gives.

And, of course, in a teen-drama like in a teen-drama, Otis falls in love with amazing Maeve and is afraid to tell her.

An entertaining, original, and exciting series that makes you feel butterflies in your stomach and warm-hearted. It deals with topics that no one likes to talk about. Certainly not openly on TV; Sexual preferences, fetishes, sexual harassment and more…

Currently, the series has 2 seasons available and each has 8 episodes.

Season 3 is set to be released during 2021, and I just cannot wait!

8. How To Get Away With Murder

Is an American legal / crime drama by Shonda Reims (the creator of Grey’s Anatomy / The Good Wife etc…)

Five first-year law students from the University of Philadelphia are selected by their successful professor of criminal law, to take part in cases she manages outside the campus.

Very quickly they find themselves within a chain of serious criminal incidents and now they have to apply the material learned in class to get out of being a suspect or take responsibility in these cases.

The series has 6 seasons (the 6th season will be released on Netflix on 31st December 2020) and each of them has 15 episodes.

Beyond the subject I love so much (I’m crazy about crime series), the editing is what makes the series so successful and suspenseful to me. Each season concentrates on one major story and at the same time several other little stories take place. At the beginning of each episode, we see a short footage from the case in question of the season and after that we go back in time to a few weeks before the event and so, slowly with the episodes we manage to understand the case and what actually happened that night.

9. Trinkets

A teenage girl mourning the death of her mother in a surprising car accident, moves in with her father, his wife and their child in a US town.

As part of the unloading, she starts stealing small items from stores and when she is caught, she is sent to the “Shoplifters Anonymous” group where she meets 2 other girls from her new high school.

Each of the girls belongs to a different social circle and the 3 become good friends in secret.

The better they know each other the more they realize that as much as each of them comes from a different world, they all deal with difficulties and complications in life that have caused them to get into bad situations.

The series may sound like a girly teen-drama with no added value, but in a very light and flowing way it manages to convey very important messages and touch major issues such as male violence against women, grief, sexual orientation, etc..

An empowering series with 2 seasons, each with 10 episodes of half an hour each.

10. New Girl

I was not supposed to include this series on this list because it aired between the years 2011-2018 but I just could not spare it from you! And in fact, I have watched it again over the last year.

“The New Girl” is an American sitcom set in Los Angeles and tells the story of Jess, an elementary school teacher with a crazy-positive character, big blue eyes and bangs, who as a result of finding out her boyfriend is cheating on her, leaves their joined apartment and moves in a big loft in the city.

The new apartment is home to her 3 new roommates – Nick, Winston, and Schmidt.
Each one is weird in its own unique way and they are all funny as hell! This is the funniest series I have watched in years. Consists of so much nonsense of the best kind!
The kind you watch, roll with laughter, and think to yourself “What have I just watched
?”

in brief,

This may not be a new series, but it is totally worth every moment
of your Netflix & Chill time
!

That’s it for now,

There are a few more really good and worth watching series that have not made it into the top ten but I figured I need to leave something for the next post. Feel free to take a peek at my Netflixtory highlight on Instagram for lots of other recommendations (:
